We run elections in June and October. Terms will be either start on July 1st or November 1st. Special elections by the board can happen at any time if there are open positions available!

 

“I don’t have the time!”

We hear you! Many of our board members are business owners, parents, grandparents, and have a full exciting life! Here’s more about what we expect of our Board Members!

Time Committment: around 75-100 hours a year

Board meetings: Must attend 9+ out of 12 of the meetings; must not miss more than 2 in a row.  Even months: 3rd Saturday of the month, hybrid: in person/virtual, 2.5 hour meetings. Odd months: 2nd Monday of the month, virtual, 1 hour meetings 

Member Meeting: 2nd Monday of November, Annually, 1 hour

In-Person Annual Conference: Usually in the fall, volunteer for the whole day, 8-10 hours

CEU event: Find and host 1 CEU event per calendar year, virtually or in-person, CEU hour must be at least 1 hour and related to the field of counseling. This takes around 2-3 hours to plan. 

Checking and responding to emails: around 15- 30 minutes a week.  

Board Position Duties: Your board position will be on average around 1 hour of week of work. Exceptions are during legislation and conference season, in which it will increase for those roles.  

Board Positions & Description


Executive Chairs:

These positions are 3-year commitments and are part of the Executive Board. The Executive Board will meet as necessary to work through issues beyond the monthly board meeting. With the exception of the executive director, these board members are voted in by members.

Executive Director: The Executive Director is appointed and hired by the board, as budget allows. The executive director is the chair of the executive board and assists with volunteer training, management and retention. The executive director will assist with all coordination of MnCA-sponsored events, CEU trainings, and Annual Fall Conference, and marketing materials, including the website, continuing education certificates, and overall day-to-day operations of MnCA.  This involves marketing duties such as timely distribution of the email blasts, event announcements, website updates, social media presence, etc. This position monitors the public face of MnCA and acts quickly to respond to problems that arise. The executive director will do legislative work for MnCA including: collaboration with BBHT, MN lobbyists, and other stakeholders to identify and address legislative needs, and will inform the full membership of any action/activity that needs attention. The ED will work to build and maintain coalitions with local and community support systems to increase availability and access of therapeutic services for Minnesotans, collaboration with similar committees with Social Workers, Psychologists, Marriage and Family therapists, and other mental health professions. This position requires the ability to disseminate scientific, inclusive, and relevant information to the membership at large via education opportunities, resources, and discussion forums. This position will overlook and assist with taxes and budgeting as necessary. 

President Elect - 1 year term: The President-Elect shall perform the duties of the President in the absence or incapacity of the President as determined by the Board of Directors.

President - 1 year term: The President shall be the chief elected officer of the Association, Chair of the Executive Board, preside at all general meetings, and receive annual reports from State Divisions and Chapters. The president is required by ACA Bylaws to attend the National Conference of the American Counseling Association, and disseminate relevant information learned to the members at large.

Past President - 1 year term: The immediate Past President shall serve as Chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee and shall be the Historian of the association. As Historian, the immediate Past President will review documents accumulated during their term of office as President and forward those considered appropriate for filing in the MnCA archives.

Secretary - 3 year term: The Secretary shall keep all records of the current activities of the Association and the Executive Board and shall submit minutes of these proceedings to the appropriate persons. Such items include board meeting agenda/minutes; creation and implementation of board structural procedures; and coordinating the annual member meeting.

Treasurer - 3 year term: The Treasurer shall collect and disburse funds of MnCA (subject to approval of the President and one other designated board member). They shall provide financial updates at each Board Meeting and are responsible for providing a financial report to the Board of Directors at the end of each fiscal year. The Treasurer is responsible for the filing of all federal and state tax forms and reports by the legally mandated deadlines of applicable state and federal legislation.


Board Chairs:

Legislative Co-Chair - 1 year term:  The Legislative Co-chairs head the legislative committee to perform research and coordinate information for the upcoming or current legislative session. The Legislative Co-Chair will communicate with the ED about important dates and events that MnCA needs to attend and have a presence relating to legislation, NAMI, and BBHT meetings. The committee meetings are required to be virtual to encompass members that can represent each area of the state.

Membership Chair - 1 year term: The Membership Chair heads the membership committee to assist with member recruitment and retention activities; and provides a presence at the Fall Conference. This chair is responsible for assisting members with any issues or concerns that arise and being able to direct them to the appropriate resource. The Membership chair will help create an annual review, review complaints and compliments about MnCA and make recommendations to the board as necessary to help retain members for MNCA. Membership chairs can also help market events by creating images, helping with email blasts, and posting on social media on a regular basis.

Membership Chair has an option of up to 3 committees, if volunteers are available: Marketing, Membership and Upcoming Counselors (College/University/Pre-licensed) . 

Professional Development Chair: Annual Conference Committee Chair, and Credentialing Chair, and Equity and Inclusion Chair . 

The Professional Development co-chairs will work with the executive director planning the annual conference and getting credentialing of all CEUS. The professional development co-chairs will create opportunities for MN counselors to access education, growth, and support in the areas of equity and inclusion. This includes taking such topics as: race, ethnicity, culture, gender, ability, age, sexuality, language, etc

The professional development has opportunities to have up to 3 committees: annual conference, credentialing, and equity and inclusion committee.

Ethics Chair - 1 year term: The Ethics chair heads the ethics committee to provide background information and input into any structural/administrative or ethical changes in the profession and the Association, and works with the marketing committee to disseminate the information as needed.
