Minnesota Counseling Association is dedicated to standing by our Minnesota counselors and supporting them with the difficult challenges we are facing following the operations of ICE federal agents on our community members and the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti. We echo the ACA statement about “Liberty and Justice for All” that you can find here: https://www.counseling.org/about/values-statements/liberty-justice-for-all.
We stand in solidarity with immigrants, refugees, and communities of all religious faiths. We can not express in words the devastating impact of violence to our community and believe that every Minnesotan deserves to live free of fear and violence. We are honored to work with individuals of all backgrounds as counselors and we promote respect for all.
MnCA also encourages our members to advocate for their communities in whatever way they find safest and you have the ability to do so. Following are some limited ideas and ways to advocate if you feel called to do so:
-Activism for all with a Mental Health Perspective: a document outlining advocacy and activism while working within our strengths https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vQYOZsKYW_UQ47_l0jD1b1WZ7g4pB3SL3_V-OqGL1TZrqTlrwhaHcVoBbhNiPU4ddv8_pmQpjmD9B5e/pub
-call on our elected officials, agency leaders and policy makers to advocate for changes: https://www.leg.mn.gov/leg/faq/faq?id=47
-Monarca provides upstander training to those looking to participate in peaceful protests: https://monarcamn.org/training
-For those local to Minneapolis, you can get involved with teams organizing to protect our neighborhoods and public schools. Take Action Minnesota/Minneapolis Families for Public Schools has provided this Defend 612 form to connect you to teams working in your area of the city: defend612.com
-reach out to us (info@mnca.org) to help provide support to Minnesota counselors that are directly impacted by these actions so we can assist and share to our members/communities
We are often sharing advocacy resources and ideas for counselors and mental health professionals on our Facebook page. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
